I actually stumbled upon this after googling up horror and sex because, as a horror fan, I had been looking into some tumblrs and couldn’t help but notice the amount of horror graphics depicting naked women being tortured/killed in horrible ways. So I started looking up what’s up with that, and I ended up finding this, which is in another realm entirely, but still relevant.

We either demonize women as sexual beings, or we punish them for being sexual. You’re either victimizing men with your ginormous bewbs or getting disembowled after having sex with the wrong guy, or the right guy - it doesn’t seem to matter really. You can also get killed for being a virgin who just won’t put out, I guess - in horror there’s no rules - you just die horribly in exploitative manners no matter what you do.

Not just in horror. :) It’s indicative of the value the society (and show-business being the extension of that) places on a female. Which all comes down to sex. Whether she is having it. Whether she is having too much and should be punished for it. Or whether she isn’t having it at all, which, of course, must be rectified by either death or change of sexual status (depending on the genre). Or whether she is having it with the “right person.” Or having it with the “wrong” one. Or whether she used to have it but isn’t having it anymore, and then, of course, it’s a quest for her to have it again (with the “right” one)…

Oh yes, I recognize that happens in other genres. But in horror it looks like a really disturbing fetish is having its catharsis on screen. You have these women, usually striking somewhat sexual poses, being mangled, killed, terrorized, all in aesthetically pleasing and gross manners, at the same time and it kinda makes you question, what the hell is going in in the mind of the person orchestrating that! I mean, are they getting off on this beautiful woman being hurt and/or killed while naked? WTF! See a doctor immediately! What the hell are you trying to sell here, you know?

When women used to be depressed or were not “taking care of their men” properly their husbands could send them to the psych ward for attitude adjustments. This was part of conditioning them to always wear a smile. They believed that if a woman saw herself smiling that it would become natural practice and that she would be “cured”. This often went along with shock therapies.

This gives a whole new level of creepiness to when random men tell you to smile.

Because it is literally what they believe they’re entitled to.
